After Mass Oct 13, 1884, heard a vision: Satan boasts he could destroy the Church if given 75–100 years and more power; Our Lord permits it. Pope sees future wars, apostasy, persecution, then composes the Prayer to St. Michael as a spiritual defense.
In the longer version of the St. Michael prayer, he petitioned St. Michael against “Satan’s abominable impiety” in Rome, “the Holy Place,” foreseeing a future apostasy and spiritual attack even in the Vatican itself.
